Quote of the Day

The success of equality in America is due, I think, mainly to the circumstance that a large number of people, who were substantially equal in all the more important matters, recognized that fact and did not set up unfounded distinctions. How far they actually are equal now, and how long they will continue to be equal when the population becomes dense, is quite another question. It is also a question, which I cannot do more than glance at in two words in this place, whether the enormous development of equality in America, the rapid production of an immense multitude of commonplace, self-satisfied, and essentially slight people is an exploit which the whole world need fall down and worship.

James Fitzjames Stephen, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, (1873)

I don't know about "essentially slight people" but, as Falstaff remarked, " Oh, give me the spare men, and spare me the great ones."

Thanks for not posting this yesterday. It would have been a bit much to take on June 6 of any year, considering what "essentially slight people" accomplished on the Normandy beaches and beyond.

Fallen creatures Americans are to a man, but even so we manuevered the British towards giving up their empire, contained the Soviet empire until it collapsed, came up with the Marshall Plan, bopped around on the moon, came up with Ted Williams and Hank Williams, We've given the world more great Train songs than all the other countries combined and we don't even ride the things any more. We spin 'em out from sheer memory.

Medical advances? That would be a Yes. Teenage fun lasting a lifetime? Well, Hell, Yes. You can own your own cannon here. I saw one fired across Interstate 80 with a bluegrass song about drowning your lover in the river playing in the background.

To live in America is to play in the Major Leagues of life, and even if you are used only in a utility role, it beats the Hell out of the Minors.

Besides how can a person be more "essentially slight" than characters like Prince Charles, Prince Phillip, Diana Spencer or Sarah Ferguson?

They oughta be asking American bus drivers and janitors for autographs...

George, I put this up as an amusing example of British snobbery, and failure to understand the USA. Also, it shows that intra-Anglospheric attitudes are not always friendly ones.

James Fitzjames Stephen was a great writer, and a man of strongly held and well-expressed opinions, but he was born too early to understand what the USA really meant.

For D Day, I had this.

Posted by: Lex at June 7, 2006 07:55 AM

Yeah, Lex, I saw your impressive D-Day stuff. You never forget to do good stuff on important anniversaries.

Those Normandy cliffs don't look "essentially slight" to these eyes and the guys who scaled them under fire could not have had "essentially slight" hearts.

I merely had to run up a steep hill in RVN under fire and I couldn't tell if I was about to have a heart attack or if I were in the midst of one.

Getting those rope ladders into place at Point du Hoc and then scaling them must have left those Rangers' knees trembling for a good while.

I do wonder if you haven't exaggerated an Anglophile Sphere into an Anglosphere. Are you sure you haven't?

I never can figure out how a guy who is at least acquainted with the rich, deep Voegelinian vision of history could get smitten with narrow concepts like "the Anglosphere" or "Jacksonian" America.

But, hey, I ain't about to become a pain in the ass! I hope you have a great summer, catch a lot of fish, cook 'em up for friends, friends of friends, and total strangers!

Posted by: George Lee at June 7, 2006 11:36 AM

The Anglosphere and Jacksonian America are merely terms to describe observed phenomena.

The Voegelinian vision of history is not incompatible with these observations. Nor is it inconsistent with the reality that our larger loyalties to God and His divine plan are embodied in the local and particular within which we live and breathe and have our being. Particular loyalties and the duties they impose and actions they compel on our part are a way of making concrete the larger aspirations we may have. Within the grand framework, we humble men carry on with our small part.

So, I see no conflict.

I agree that the heroics of D Day are a rebuttal of Stephen's snide comment. I think that he would have appreciated that had he lived to see it. He was a troubled Christian, who tried to reconcile his religious views with the scientific challenges they seemed to be facing in his day. I hope he has had his queries answered, and is Heaven now. I want him to be in the symposium with Tocqueville and Acton and Hayek and Smith and Burke when I get there.

I hope you have good summer as well. Thanks for the good wishes.

Wasn't it a pretty reasonable remark in its time? It was WWII that was the making of the USA in the wider world.

Posted by: dearieme at June 8, 2006 08:12 AM

It was a typical remark at the time. It shows the attitude of a certain part of the British elite. And it shows a lack of imagination about the rising power of the coming decades.

Posted by: Lexington Green at June 8, 2006 09:54 AM

The Attorney General of the USA is Alberto Gonzales, the son of a construction worker, which illustrates Lex's point.

Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez has done rather well for somone who is the son of impoverished immigrants who just barely got across the Rio Grande a generation ago.

One could multiply examples all day long. Congress is full of Hispanics as is America's hi-tech industry, entertainment, sports, geesh, you name it...Dr. J.J. Mata took care of me in Mercy Hospital in Laredo, and Scarface Machada was a famous San Antonio Judge who, in a different way, "took care" of a lot of bad guys.

Some imported underclass! One of them snagged the current Governor of Florida, who happens to be the son of a US President.

But, give ol Frank credit for noticing the hugely increased Hispanic population and the likelihood of its increasing even more and having a powerful cultural impact. That is more than any of the "Anglospherists" ever do.

Incredibly, "Anglospherists" seems to simultaneously believe the Peter Hitchens view that Britain has already been largely abolished and its distinctive traditions hopelessy lost and also (!) that in the future Britain will play a leading role in a "network commonwealth" based on the very moral, legal, and political traditions that they have noted being eroded, jettisoned, abolished.

The OED has a lot of definitions of a "commonwealth" and there ain't a one of them that fits the fanciful notions of the "Anglospherists". Today's Britian has increasingly less and less in common with yesterday's Britain, much less with the USA of today or the future. Could the Britain of today or tomorrow even be in a commonwealth, network or otherwise, with the Britain of the past? Why, they might be mutually hostile.

The only way an Anglosphere could come into existence would be if the bluest aspects of Blue State America overwhelmed everything else here, which would be a disaster.

Lex, think how gruesome American life would be if, instead of Hispanics, we had imported 30 million Philip Larkins, Margaret Drabbles, etc. Better a switchblade packing Mexican who venerates the Virgin and is kin to Cochise and Geronimo than some mincing, smarmy, self-hating spiritual derelict. That Mexican has potential to learn from us and to teach us something.

How can you think that the transcendental orientation that Prof. Voegelin deemed so important is shared by today's Americans and today's Brits? Britain is arguably the most anti-Christian country in Europe.

What matters in a culture is what parents are thinking when they bury a child, or a child a parent, what people are thinking the first time they make love, into what contexts of meaning they place such experiences--not how fast fiber optics enable them to communicate with far away people, commodity exchanges, trade relationships.

Technocrats and businessmen can't make head nor tail of what I am saying. It is sho nuff true though.

Without a shared transcendental orientation there will not be shared conceptions of justice and without shared conceptions of justice you won't have similar public policies, either foreign or domestic. And without all those "the common" doesn't travel into the future whether "the wealth" does or not.

Geez, one minute the "Anglosphere" is something that is just now emerging and will firm up in the future, the next minute it is something that already exists just fine, and the next minute it is something that has existed for years and years and years far into the past. You guys are freaking killing me! Hehehe, it is turning me into the pain in the ass I told you I wasn't gonna be!

Back to Stevens. Hawthorne had published The Scarlet Letter (the greatest novel of forgiveness ever written in any language) and this guy was banging on about our essential slightness. Mark Twain had Huckleberry Finn on a raft on the Mississippi making moral choices that were far from essentially slight. The Hudson River school was turning out essentially unslight pictures. Starkest of all, men walked America who had just been through The Late Unpleasantness. Marvelous men, and women too, on both sides and among the black people too.

Stevens missed all that, but we can't think that he or the British were the only ones so blinkered. Thomas Jefferson wrote "Notes on the State of Virginia" because the French insisted that North American animals could not be as large as European animals, that they were, hehehe, anatomically slight.

Oh, "Jacksonian" America? Talk about a term with no heuristic value for political science. It is too impressionistic, but if there is one, it is a Stonewall variety not an Andrew sort, thank God. Lex, if you did something terrible to someone, really terrible, you'd go to Confession later, make an Act of Contrition, get absolved, do your penance and atone, and for the rest of your life, you'd feel bad about it. You ain't cut from the cloth that Andrew Jackson and his compeers were cut from, and neither is anybody in the American public policy making realm, nor has there been for a long, long, long time.

It is just enjoyable to think oneself "Jacksonian" on a day when the world has made one very angry.

There are a few Andrew Jacksonians running around but not a one of them has ever, or would ever, use the term "Jacksonian." They may vote, but their numbers in elective office are insignificant. I bet you can't think of 5 elected to Congress in the last 50 years, and if you can, I bet they didn't accomplish much.

George, thanks for all the thoughts. I am in general agreement regarding the role of hispanics in the USA now and in the future. I think that we need to control our borders, reform the immigration process, but end up admitting a large number of LEGAL immigrants.

I am also in partial agreement regarding Britain. I think it is an open question what role Britain will play in the future, whether it will get sucked into the Euro-mess forever, or not. To the extent the Anglosphere is an empirical entity, Britain (especially England) shows commonalities with the USA, anglo-Canade, etc., more than it does with France or Germany. But the future is open, however. That said, you are not being fair to the Brits. The typical Brit is no more represented by Margaret Drabble or John Pilger than the typical Mexican is by the gangbanger doing a drive-by shooting. Both in their own way are pathological cases, not typical, not an adequate basis to judge the whole group.

As to the term Jacksonian, I suggest you read Walter Russell Mead's book, for the full exposition of what he means by that term.

I don't think the transcendental orientation depicted by Voegelin is shared by more than a few people in the world. If that was the basis for citizenship or mere international cooperation, we would never be able to do anything.

As to going to confession, etc. Yes, I'm a Catholic, I go to confession. The details beyond that are between me, the priest, and God.
